    Must read: Glass Doors

by  • May 9, 2013 • Kitchen design, Kitchen trends, Kitchens, New designs • 0 Comments

I’m not a very good, or a very keen cook and I particularly don’t like spending hours in the kitchen when the weather is nice outside. So having a run of  folding-sliding doors which I could fling open and let the sun and light in, as I slave over a hot stove, is hugely appealling.

Which is why I couldn’t wait to read the Beautiful ideas for Glass Doors feature in our June issue – on sale now.

There are six pages of inspirational ideas, showing you how to let the outside in. We’ve included

    Realistic wallpapers for your kitchen

    by  • May 6, 2013 • Finishing touches, Kitchens, New designs • 2 Comments

Do you fancy something a bit different on your kitchen walls? How about a wall of natural bamboo, climbing plants, or glamorous black sequins? All are possible and much more, thanks to the Captured Reality Collection of digitally printed wallpaper murals, from Mr Perswall. The collection features 26 designs that create the illusion of architectural details, industrial finishes and textured surfaces. I particularly like this realistic Brick Wall.

but perhaps this industrial style Painted Concrete Wall is more your thing?

Out and about: Grand cooking with Grand Cuisine

    by  • May 1, 2013 • Appliances, Out and about • 0 Comments

I am something of an amateur cook. Amateur in the sense that I have seen many fantastic meals prepared and been taught to emulate them but sadly, in my own kitchen, the results tend to be less spectacular. Success is not raw and not food poisoning. Anything else is a bonus.

However, if you long to get your hands on professional kitchen kit, Electrolux‘s Grand Cuisine collection, which owes a debt to the company’s appliances being in half of Europe’s Michelin-starred restaurants, is for you. Launched last year, it includes the holy grail of appliances, a sous vide system, and an array of other high-tech appliances sure to give your meals a touch of restaurant-style flavour.

Part of the Grand Cuisine sous vide system

It should come as no surprise that a suite of Grand Cuisine is installed in the kitchen of Claude Bosi’s restaurant, Hibiscus. I was recently invited to sample the results of this pro kit in the hands of a pro – Claude himself – in a The Piano-inspired lunch, owing to Electrolux’s support of the Film Festival de Cannes.

Today I have some gorgeous black and white kitchens to tempt you. What do you think of this monochrome kitchen-diner? The light-hearted artwork and cat wall art are a nice touch.

The curvy chairs and the semi-circle worktop soften the look in this monochrome kitchen and make it feel very inviting.

White crockery and black and white family photos stand out against the black feature wall, in this modern, monochrome kitchen

    New! Helpful heating app

by  • April 28, 2013 • Apps, Favourite things, Finishing touches, Kitchen makeovers, Kitchens, Shopping • 0 Comments

It’s hard to think about heating if you’re looking forward to summer but if you’re fitting a new kitchen, considering how you heat it is vital.

Underfloor heating is a fantastic option but pipes usually need to be fitted as part of a whole floor renovation, while electric mats can be pricey to run. The solution most of us choose is a radiator.

As I discovered when I revamped my home, the choice is huge, ranging from blocky white basic models to sleek designer ones. And that was before I even got into how much heat they produce, which is displayed in btu (British thermal unit).

If only Bisque‘s free iPad app had been around to help me!

Use Bisque’s new app to see products in different colours and finishes

Not only does it show all its radiators in a variety of colours, there’s also a service to send you colour or finish samples at home.

It even has a heat loss calculator, so you can work out how many watts you need, plus suggestions for which radiators work best for that room. Just fill in the size of your room, wall type, windows and any variations.

Getting hot and bothered with btu figures? Try the heat loss calculator

    Meet the aquarium TV

    by  • April 21, 2013 • Favourite things, Kitchen projects • 0 Comments

With the rise of open-plan living comes the need to conceal – kitchen appliances behind tambour doors, knife blocks tucked into drawers… but what to do with the TV?

Most hang as featureless black slabs on walls when they’re not on and seeing as increasing numbers of kitchen-diners have one, the question about where to put it becomes more pertinent.

I particularly like this solution, which uses Parapan in Cream White – a sleek hi-gloss acrylic material often seen in kitchens as worktops, doors and splashbacks.

    TV meets fishtank… from £6,806

Designed by David Free of Picture House Cabinets, it houses a 52in screen, which lifts up when required, sliding back down when not in use, It’s also available in bespoke sizes and 22 different colours if you’d like it to match your kitchen cabinetry.

Would you have it in your home? Leave us a comment below.

Must read: Top 50 Kitchen must-haves

    Gorgeous shades of grey

by  • April 15, 2013 • Kitchen design, Kitchen news, Kitchen trends, Kitchens, Uncategorized • 0 Comments

I must admit, an oh-so-fashionable grey kitchen wouldn’t be my first colour choice. However, a grey scheme can look stunning, as these kitchens prove.

The Georgian-inspired joinery in this classic kitchen has been painted a bold, dark grey.

Soft grey units are teamed with black granite worktops to give this country kitchen a modern edge. The pale wood flooring helps keep the room light.

Stainless-steel accessories and a mirrored-glass splashback help give this kitchen its modern, sleek feel.

Shades of soft grey and white are echoed in classic marble and pale stone, to create this serene scheme.

Don’t fancy a completely grey kitchen? How about adding some grey accessories to your current scheme, instead?

The stunning Wiltshire Dining Chair is upholstered in textured grey linen. Teamed with this solid oak dining table, it would look good in a modern kitchen diner.

I can always find room for another mug or plate, especially when it’s as nice as this lovely chic grey and cream polka dot crockery, from Brissi. The collection includes Jumbo cups and a jug which would look great in my kitchen right now, filled with bright yellow tulips.

    Breakfast grey polka dot collection

You can lovingly dry your new spotty crockery with The Lovebirds tea towel. It’s rather tweet!

These stylish cushions would look equally at home on your kitchen chairs, or your garden furniture.
