    Must read: Wine cabinets

    by  • April 11, 2013 • Appliances, Kitchens, Shopping, Small appliances • 0 Comments

I love the idea of a wine cabinet and my dream kitchen would definitely include one. It would be filled with a wonderful selection of wine and champagne, ready for every occasion. The reality is I have neither the space nor the wine collection to justify one. What I buy at the weekend, tends to get drunk that weekend. But, if you’re thinking of starting a wine collection, or just want a dedicated wine storage place, then I suggest you read the Wine Cabinets article in our May issue, first.

Wine cabinets are available in lots of different sizes and boast a range of clever features, such as adjustable temperature zones, UV-resistant doors and humidity control which stops corks from drying out and labels from peeling. It’s definitely a worthwhile investment for wine lovers, everywhere.

Haven’t had time to buy our May issue yet? Download a digital version here. Or subscribe, here.

    Cheers!

Enter Husky and its fab undercounter fridge:

    Kitchen-diner tables

    by  • April 1, 2013 • Finishing touches, Kitchen furniture • 0 Comments

The last time all my family came round for lunch, we had to bring in the garden table and tag it onto the end of the kitchen table so everyone could sit down. With Easter looming and another family gathering planned, I think it might be time I invested in a new kitchen table.

I’m rather taken with the Magic Table. It can be adjusted to any height, so you can use it as a coffee table in your sitting room and just extend it to its full size when needed. Clever, eh?

The Magic table and four chairs, in Ruby Red

The compact design of the Union White dining table, with its four nestling chairs, would also make a nice addition to my kitchen.

I like the look of Nordic Style‘s Round Oak Top Table (and I’m also rather taken with the Open Top Dresser. Plenty of room on that for my large collection of colourful crockery).

    Utility rooms

    by  • March 25, 2013 • Kitchens • 2 Comments

I would love a utility room like this. There’s plenty of cupboard space, so I wouldn’t have to cram all my cleaning products into the cupboard under my kitchen sink. And the space-saving and oh-so-useful Sheila Maid airer means I wouldn’t have damp clothes draped over every radiator in the house.

If you’re planning your utility room from scratch, you’ll definitely want to include a sink. Here, wooden shelves above the sink are ideal for storing vases, while cupboards beneath, keeps pans hidden away. The blind adds a cheerful pop of colour.

Make the most of every inch of space, by putting up a Shaker-style peg rail to give you a handy area to hang up cleaning kit, like brushes, aprons and towels.

Or free up some floor space with a shelving unit that hangs on the back of the door.

A tall cupboard like this is the ideal place to hide your ironing board and vacuum cleaner. Much better than my current storage place, under the stairs.

Floor to ceiling shelves make the most of every inch of storage space. These neatly labelled baskets are both practical and stylish.

Let’s face it, washing machines aren’t the prettiest of appliances. Here they’ve been hidden behind tall cabinetry. The limestone floor and the pale cream cabinetry, keeps this utility room looking tidy and bright.

You don’t have to choose cabinetry. Make curtains to hide your cleaning products instead and give your utility room a country feel.

Finally, why not use your utility room to do your recycling – separate plastic, paper and metal tin cans into portable bags.

    Must read: Upholstered dining chairs

by  • March 21, 2013 • Kitchen furniture, Kitchens, New designs, Shopping • 2 Comments

My pine kitchen table and chairs look nice, but the chairs are so hard and uncomfortable you really wouldn’t want to linger. You’d think I’d learn from my mistake, but no, I’ve managed to buy some equally uncomfortable dining chairs too. Again, they look the part, but the wooden barley twist backs are  so uncomfortable, we’re soon heading back to the sofa. In fact, I’m only one step away from sitting on the sofa to eat my dinner.

So, when our fabulous April issue arrived in the office, I turned to The Upholstered Dining Chairs feature straight away.

Upholstered dining chairs look stylish, feel comfortable and are a great way to add colour and interest to your kitchen. I like

    How to store coffee pods

by  • March 20, 2013 • Appliances, Favourite things, Finishing touches, Kitchen trends, Shopping • 1 Comment

The age of the capsule coffee machine is a wonderous thing but a common problem is how to store those tricky little pods.

Bleary-eyed folk in the morning need a simple solution and if you’re revamping your kitchen, it’s wise to work one into the design.

A drawer is a smart idea – this bespoke pull-out in a Mark Wilkinson Furniture Newlyn kitchen has individual slots for minimum fuss.

Organised coffee pods underneath a built-in machine – genius!

In a similar vein, these carved bespoke drawers from Tom Howley feature the names of the coffee pods!

There are plenty of freestanding racks on the market but a bespoke solution is often more elegant. This one from Kaizen Furniture is crafted from rich black walnut.

    New blue and white crockery

by  • March 18, 2013 • Accessories, Favourite things, Finishing touches, Kitchens, New designs, Shopping • 0 Comments

I know I’ve said it before and now I’m going to say it again – I love blue and white china and now spring has sprung there are some lovely, fresh, new designs around. Here are some of my favourites.

The Cirro collection from the LSA immediately caught my eye. Team the blue and white porcelain, with its hand-applied pattern, with blue and white glassware and table linen. Perfect for summer dining.

We always get excited when we hear Le Creuset are bringing out a new colour and their latest colour, Marseille, doesn’t disappoint. Here’s the Cast Iron Shallow Casserole and Stoneware Petite Casserole…

and here’s the Cast Iron Square Grillit and Stoneware Pie Dish

We’ve mentioned Jersey Pottery’s Sardine Run ceramics, from Liberty, before – Ysanne’s a bit of a fan. The bold, contemporary design makes this collection of tableware perfect for both casual and formal dining.

    Best new online shops

by  • March 17, 2013 • Accessories, Favourite things, Finishing touches, Kitchen makeovers, Shopping • 0 Comments

Kitchen in need of a revamp? I’m a firm believer in a little retail therapy in the form of accessories.

This week, clearly just in the name of research, I have been scouring the internet for the best new online shops that offer quirky kitchenalia.

Fans of real stars and stripes Americana, get ready to bookmark Lexington – a treasure trove of flag-tastic tableware. I love these Country Placemats, which declare that ‘Happines is Home Made’.

Country Placemats from Lexington, £20 each

Also check out their Mini Cups – United States of Adorable!

If you have more modern tastes, take a browse around Forever Contemporary, a sleek boutique with lots of interesting products from independent designers. Not that I open many bottles but I do have a soft spot for this cute character – the Undergrowth Bottle Opener. It’d look just right standing on my open shelving.

There’s also brightly patterned mugs, crockery and lighting galore to spice up your scheme.

Lastly, The Wise House is also all about originality – and one of my favourite features is that whatever you buy arrives wrapped in brown paper and tied up with string.

Why not try these funky coloured storage tins?

French Kitchen Storage Tins, three for £37.50

Must read: A touch of colour

by  • March 14, 2013 • Kitchen design, Kitchen furniture, Kitchen makeovers, Kitchen trends, Kitchens, New designs, Uncategorized • 1 Comment

The kitchen, in my first flat had plain cream walls, tiles and cabinetry. I thought it was very boring and so I painted the cabinets bright blue. I was very pleased with the result. Now, ten years and two house moves later, I have another cream kitchen. Reading the ‘A Touch of Colour’ article in our new April issue, reminded me of my first kitchen and how proud I was of my bold, vibrant colour scheme.

The article is packed with beautiful kitchens with bright hi-gloss finishes and traditional painted cabinetry in subtle hues. If you’re thinking of adding colour to your kitchen, read this first.

My favourite is this Homebase kitchen, painted in French Blue-Grey.

But perhaps you’ll prefer the Harvey Jones scheme in purple and damson, or the Mereway Kitchens design in soft Willow Green?
