Quirky kitchen shelves for trainspotters

There’s no doubt that adding a few unusual pieces to your kitchen is an easy way of personalising it.

So when I saw these former luggage racks from decommissioned 1960s Metropolitan line tube trains that have been made into shelves by the London Transport Museum, I had to share them with you.

The racks have been cleaned and customised so you can have a little bit of London history in your kitchen. Plus, as they’re made from light but strong aluminium, and used to carrying heavy briefcases, bags and suitcases, they’re perfect for storing pans, jars and bottles.

The shelves will be available from the beginning of February on the London Transport Museum website.

Prices start at £150 for the small rack measuring 45 x 26 x 32cm and £250 for the largest measuring 101 x 23.5 x 33.5cm.

Earlier in the week I was let out of the office (dangerous but true), to see what new products Garden Trading and BlissHome had to offer for autumn. There’s almost too many to blog about, so I’ve narrowed it down to my favourites which was harder than I thought it would be.

First up, Garden Trading and this stylish yet practical freestanding storage unit and wine rack with room for 18 bottles. It’s topped with zinc and has a handy drawer for whatever kitchen paraphernalia you care to put in it – corkscrews, bottle stoppers (hmm, there’s a theme emerging…). More practical storage solutions, this time for your cleaning equipment. Loving the new Slate Grey colour, it’s great for keeping everything tidy and in one place.

From BlissHome, we have some beautiful, retro-style kitchenware by Orla Kiely (if you don’t know who she is, where have you been?) This ceramic composter looks nothing like a composter – which is precisely why I love it. Let it take pride of place on your worktop and do your bit for the environment.

Moving away from new designs, BlissHome has a great range of mugs, aprons, tea towels, fridge magnets – you name it – created by designspark using posters from Transport for London’s archives. My favourites from the Underground range are the Summer Sales and Trooping the Colour designs. Emily
