    Must read: Glass Doors

by  • May 9, 2013 • Kitchen design, Kitchen trends, Kitchens, New designs • 0 Comments

I’m not a very good, or a very keen cook and I particularly don’t like spending hours in the kitchen when the weather is nice outside. So having a run of  folding-sliding doors which I could fling open and let the sun and light in, as I slave over a hot stove, is hugely appealling.

Which is why I couldn’t wait to read the Beautiful ideas for Glass Doors feature in our June issue – on sale now.

There are six pages of inspirational ideas, showing you how to let the outside in. We’ve included

    How to store coffee pods

by  • March 20, 2013 • Appliances, Favourite things, Finishing touches, Kitchen trends, Shopping • 1 Comment

The age of the capsule coffee machine is a wonderous thing but a common problem is how to store those tricky little pods.

Bleary-eyed folk in the morning need a simple solution and if you’re revamping your kitchen, it’s wise to work one into the design.

A drawer is a smart idea – this bespoke pull-out in a Mark Wilkinson Furniture Newlyn kitchen has individual slots for minimum fuss.

Organised coffee pods underneath a built-in machine – genius!

In a similar vein, these carved bespoke drawers from Tom Howley feature the names of the coffee pods!

There are plenty of freestanding racks on the market but a bespoke solution is often more elegant. This one from Kaizen Furniture is crafted from rich black walnut.

The big idea: neon kitchen accents

    by  • February 15, 2013 • Kitchen design, Kitchen trends, Kitchens • 0 Comments

If you think neon is all 1980s raves, sweatbands and glow sticks, it’s time to think again! Neon has hit the catwalks hard this season and is popping up all over our homes too.

This kitchen is definitely no shrinking violet, with its glossy fluoro yellow finish across the back of a statement curved island. It’s loud, it’s bright and it’s bursting with energy – I reckon this space definitely shows how adding a bold shot of neon-inspired colour to the kitchen can bring it bang up-to-date in an instant.

Should neon be consigned to style archives, or will be you trying it out in your home in 2013?

    Edited choice: kitchen blogs

While the BK blog brings you fabulous, fresh kitchen inspiration on a daily basis, there’s a whole host of lovely kitchens elsewhere on the web.

We know you don’t have time to pour through them all, so here’s a short but sweet round up of some of the best bits we’ve discovered.

Over on the Design Milk blog, this quirky Gemelli Design Studio kitchen by Bulgarians Desislava and Branimira Ivanova caught our eye:

    Food for thought: Kitchen larders

by  • February 1, 2013 • Favourite things, Kitchen design, Kitchen furniture, Kitchen projects, Kitchens • 0 Comments

Dining and relaxing aside, your kitchen is primarily for cooking. But a hard-to-access or badly organised food store can make that tricky.

How often do cans get lost at the back of cupboards? I seem to lose noodles particularly – stash them at the back, forget I have them, and buy more noodles.

A well-organised larder is the solution – and there’s lots of choice when it comes to style and configurations. Here’s just some I love.

    Pay attention to your interior

Even if you want a completely painted scheme, you can still add the warmth of timber on the inside of a larder. Then personalise it as suits –

    Beautiful carved kitchen details

by  • January 27, 2013 • Favourite things, Finishing touches, Kitchen design, Kitchen furniture, Kitchens • 0 Comments

What turns a nice kitchen into a stunning one? The answer is detail – whether it’s layers of colour, quirky fabrics and wallpaper or personal touches. Carved accents are also a great way to take your design up a notch, so here are some of my favourite ideas to inspire you:

We love these Roman numerals above a bank of ovens

Dates, names or interesting words all make a kitchen feel instantly like home. Here, Roman numerals mark a significant year in a subtle walnut panel surrounded by maple furniture. Kitchen by Brookmans.

Store the little things in these drawers

Turn leftover space into useful storage with miniature drawers, given a quirky twist with colloquial labels. These pull-outs, despite being small in size, have neat dovetailed joints for strength and beauty. Bespoke European oak drawers with hand-painted furniture by Matthew Marsden Furniture.

    Decorate secret storage

Carved lettering isn’t just a detail to have on show. This Gothic-style type appears on a solid oak bread bin lid and a concealed wine drawer above for a hint of hidden heritage. York Minster kitchen by Prentice.

    Shelving can be stunning

Even the smallest part of a kitchen design can benefit from some carved detail. Here, an open shelving unit has been adorned with castellated sections and shaped corner brackets to add personality. From Second Nature‘s Cornell range

    Clever kitchen storage

by  • January 23, 2013 • Accessories, Favourite things, Kitchen design, Kitchen furniture, Kitchen trends, Kitchens, New designs, Storage • 3 Comments

Whether your kitchen is big or small, how well it works comes down to how the space is used, as well as how much space you have.

That’s why when I see a smart storage idea, I love to share it with you. The latest one to make its way to the top of my wishlist is this smart worktop system from Gama Decor, part of Porcelanosa.

We love this fab flip-open storage

Store your utensils in the built-in recesses, knives in the covered slots, or anything else you need when you’re cooking. Such as spices…

    Modern kitchens win!

by  • January 16, 2013 • Kitchen design, Kitchen furniture, Kitchen trends, Kitchens • 3 Comments

BK blog reader, your secret is out!

    You love glossy kitchens.

Hundreds of you voted for your favourite style of kitchen in our poll and almost two thirds of you plumped for either hi-gloss cabinetry or hi-gloss mixed with wood.

While Shaker style and painted furniture came in second place, wooden kitchens trailed last.

Without further ado, here’s some of our favourite designs – enjoy!

This sleek white design makes short work of an existing pillar:

    Ideas for small kitchens

by  • January 9, 2013 • Kitchen design, Kitchen furniture, Kitchen projects, Kitchens • 1 Comment

Planning a small kitchen is often a difficult task and it’s one of the most common topics we get asked about at Beautiful Kitchens.

Simple cream makes this compact kitchen feel bigger

But if you’ve no room to extend, or extending only buys you so much extra space, there is still hope. Here are a few tips and tricks to try.

1, Be reasonable about what you want to include. Too many appliances or oversized elements will make the space feel smaller. Pair down your wishlist to what you really need or try to ‘double up’
