    Must read: Choosing a dishwasher

    by  • March 28, 2013 • BK Appliances • 0 Comments

Christmas  2011 was particularly memorable for me. Not because I spent the day with my family, or because I received so many wonderful, thoughtful presents. No, it was particularly memorable because our dishwasher broke and we had ten people coming for lunch.

A dishwasher is pretty near the top of my essential kitchen kit list and with Easter just around the corner and a family lunch planned, I’m glad we now have a dishwasher in full working order. So, if you’re thinking of buying one, I recommend you read the ‘Choosing a Dishwasher’ feature in our April issue, first.

They’re not the water-and-energy guzzling monsters you might think they are. In fact, you’ll use fewer resources than if

    Say it with words

Admittedly, I’m not one for the domesticated duties that come with owning a kitchen. I’m not a great cook, my cupboards overspill and I abhor the washing-up – even when that mainly consists of loading and unloading a dishwasher. For me there’s no fun in it, so when I do finally admit defeat and unenthusiastically make a start, I often wish there was something that would cheer me up.

Not having installed a TV in the kitchen as yet, I think the next best thing may be a slogan of some sort – something quirky that will bring a smile to my lips. This, for example, is perfect…

A simple stencil, but it adds so much personality and humour to the room. The question is, if you were following this idea for your own kitchen, what phrase or line would you choose?

    Water-saving dishwasher

    by  • August 27, 2011 • BK Appliances • 0 Comments

You wouln’t think it looking outside at the ‘summer’ weather we’re having right now but water is a precious commodity. Even though only 33% of us own dishwasher in the UK, sales are growing. One of the best reasons, in my opinion, to invest in a dishwasher is the water it can save compared to washing up by hand. Well, that and the fact that I hate washing up (while I think of it any chance of a hands-off ironing machine anyone?).

Now the clever people at Maytag have launched a machine that uses just 6 litres of water per cycle – that’s the lowest on the market – compared to an average of between 42 and 104 litres for hand washing dishes.

    Maytag 6 Litre Dishwashe

    Maytag 6 Litre Dishwasher

This 13-place machine is A+AA-rated for energy, washing and drying, has a steam clean function, 42db quite operation, 6 programmes and flexible and height adjustable racks. With both freestanding and integrated models available, there’s something for everyone.

For those of you without a dishwasher… make space for one in your new plan. You won’t be sorry.

    Washing-up made easier

If I had to pick a desert island appliance, asumming that my island had a power supply, it would be my breadmaker. It whirs away at least two or three times a week,  and while it’s threatened to break down a couple of times, so far it’s carried on rather stoically.

Great bread, shame about the cleaning after - my Russell Hobbs Breadman

The thing I hate, though, is cleaning it. The tin would rust if I put it in the dishwasher or soaked it, so it’s usually a battle between me with a soft cloth and stubborn bits of welded-on flour.

However, I have found a new helpmate – Vileda’s non scratch Power Scourer.

    Vileda Non-scratch Power scourer

Soft enough for non-stick surfaces with a top that resists getting food stuck in it, it’s really quite smart. Plus it’s pink, so I can’t get it mixed up with the green one I use for cleaning my cats’ food bowls!

    Wash 'n' go!

I recently visited a Beko press launch to see some of its upcoming cleaning appliances and was pretty impressed with what I saw. The sleek, OneTouch dishwasher does exactly what it says on the tin – one button controls everything. Clever sensors inside the machine assess how full it is and then decides how much water to use and how long to clean the dishes for, and the digital display on the door lets you know the cycle’s progress.

The next thing I saw (and the most amazing if you’re bit sad like me), was the Xpress washing machine, the fastest washing machine in the world. It’ll wash 2kg of clothing in just 14 minutes. 14 minutes – that’s madness! Okay, so 2kg isn’t a great deal but it’s perfect for washing a shirt or your favourite dress that you really want to wear for a night out. Failing that it’ll do a bigger 8kg load at 30ºC in 28 minutes – which isn’t too shabby either. Emily
